Very often, we hear Pentecostals and a large junk of Catholics
raining Holy Ghost fire on their enemies; real and imaginary. The idea of Holy Ghost
fire perhaps originated from the idea that hell itself is full of fire and
thus, fire is the worst fate of man, therefore, a holy version of it must still
be maintained and managed by the creator through his angels who would at
request unleash them at perceived enemies.
The average Nigerian has a bundle of spiritual
problems (as perceived). These mirage of spiritual ills are treated at
Spiritual clinics such as crusade grounds, deliverance sessions, through medications
such as fasting, chanting some portions of the bible, praying, visiting deserts
etc.
The core communication channel between man and God is
prayer. Because the Nigerian man is clouded by his problems, he is inclined to
rid himself of spiritual maladies before focusing on the welfare of his relationship with God, this is
just like finishing the race before servicing the car!
With too many enemies to battle against: physical and
spiritual, economic and political, religious and social; the Nigerian man is
always in a battle. And on each occasion, the prayer to the God of Love cum God
of War is not complete until we launch Holy Ghost fire and thunder on some of
our perceived enemies.
How did it all start? Is Holy Ghost fire biblical, why
are our enemies still in smiles yet we sent them Holy Ghost fire the night
before?
In Exodus, God came to Moses in a burning bush,
accepted the gift of Abel as a fire, in Deuteronomy, he affirms that he is the
consuming fire and a jealousy God (Repeated in Hebrew chapter 12). In the book
of kings, Elijah in his famous encounter with the prophets of Baal called on
God and he answered in a consuming fire that consumed all that was offered.
Also, in the Acts of the Apostles, the spirit rested
upon them as tongues of fire, this perhaps is the closest we can get to Holy
Ghost fire, a fire that identifies God’s own chosen people.
Notables:
- The fire only consumed wholesome offerings made with a pure heart
- The fire of god does not deal with unclean people
- God who is Love (James) cannot be interested in burning people to ashes.
- The fire referred to in literary forms in the bible is a purifying fire that makes all cleaned and acceptable to God, the same fire through which God comes to take his offering from his children.
Intended usage:
Because God is love, all he sends is full of love and
sweetness, the Holy Spirit and all that it brings is love, the Holy Ghost fire
is a fire of love that purifies and makes us worthy of God’s blessings. This
fire brings in us, a new desire and unquenchable thirst for the goodness that
comes from God, thus making us happy because we have faith for a life with God
in eternity.
So, next time you want to send Holy Ghost fire, be
more considerate, and use it on your friends, except, you are doing it out of
love for your enemies.
